Natural Non-Toxic Vinegar Cleaner
This DIY natural non-toxic citrus peel cleaner is so easy, made with only two ingredients. Contains no toxic chemicals, naturally disinfecting, with a sweet citrus smell and no vinegar smell!
To make this all purpose cleaner all you need to do is take the peels, rinds, and even seeds of any citrus fruit, lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, or any other citrus peels you might have. Add them them to a jar submerged with vinegar for a minimum of 1 week. You can leave them to infuse for much longer, if you dont have a bunch of peels at once, you can add them as time goes on. I keep a few jars under my sink filled with vinegar and add my peels over time. Once its full and infused for enough time, strain and add to a glass spray bottle. I like using mason jars, with these mason jar spray lids.
This is an amazing eco-friendly, zero wase, non-toxic cleaner that smells like summer! The vinegar smell is so minimal you wont even notice it, there’s still a hint of vinegar, but the citrus overpowers it.
Why make your own natural non-toxic cleaner?
I have transitioned my home to have 0 toxic cleaners, for many reasons. Store bought cleaners are filled with harmful chemicals and toxins, ingredients I cannot even pronounce. The essential oils and acids in the peel of citrus aren’t just for smell, they’re also natural degreasers, with antibacterial properties.
Ever spend the day cleaning your house, and find it hard to even breathe with all the smells of the cleaners? These harmful chemicals can cause irritation when inhaled, irritation to the eyes, headaches, and respiratory issues. There are links to cancer from store bought household cleaners, and I personally dont think its worth the risk to use them for a “clean” home. Feel safe and at ease knowing what’s in your cleaner with this recipe, and its so cost effective!
Nontoxic Citrus Peel Vinegar Cleaner
Equipment
- Glass Spray Bottle
Ingredients
- Citrus Peel Can sub for 15-20 drops essential oil
- White distilled vinegar
Instructions
- Collect your citrus peels in a glass container with a lid. You can add as much or as little as you want. Seeds, rind, pith, its all good! The more peels used the more citrus smell you will get, but make sure to leave room for vinegar. You can substitute 15-20 drops of essential oil for peels, or even add a few drops along with the peels.
- If you do not have an abundance of peels at once, you can add them to the jar as you use them. I have a jar under my sink filled with vinegar, I add my peels to it as I go. Just make sure they are always covered with vinegar to avoid mold growth.
- Making sure your peels are submerged in vinegar, put the lid on the jar and let it infuse for minimum 1 week in a dark place. (I leave mine under my sink)
- After the minimum 1 week, (although I tend to leave mine for a while as I add peels as I go and that's fine too!) strain your vinegar and add it into a glass bottle with spray lid. I love using mason jars and the spray lids that screw on the jars. You can increase your batch by diluting with water, but its optional as straight vinegar is more disinfecting anyways.
- This all purpose cleaner can be used on counters, sinks, showers, toilets, bathtub, appliances, inside fridge, disinfecting cutting boards, even doubles as a natural fabric softener! Do not use this spray on granite!
Notes
- This cleaner can be used on counters, sinks, shower, toilet, appliances, mirrors, plastic, windows, inside the fridge, disinfecting cutting boards, almost anything!
- DO NOT use it on granite surfaces
- You can use essential oils if you dont have citrus peels, lemon, orange, lavender, or any essential oil you would like. 15-20 drops, depending on your presence of how strong you like it.
- This can double as fabric softener, it has no vinegar smell. Vinegar helps to soften the fabrics, and the citrus leaves a fresh scent.
- You can increase your yield by diluting with water, but its not necessary. Vinegar on its own is more disinfecting anyways.
